Paul A. Welling, M.D. is the Joseph S. and Ester Handler Professor of Medicine, Nephrology, and Physiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Kansas and completed his post-doctoral training at Yale University School of Medicine with Dr. Gerhard Giebisch. Dr. Welling is an internationally recognized authority on the molecular bases of potassium and sodium balance, electrolyte disorders, hypertension, and kidney disease. A major research focus is developing a mechanistic understanding of how potassium diet affects blood pressure, and cardiovascular-kidney health. Dr. Welling is the recipient of many awards, including the Steve Hebert Award and the Carl W.
Gottschalk Distinguished Lectureship from the American Society of Physiology and the Donald Seldin Award from the American Heart Association. Dr. Welling currently serves as Principal Investigator on three NIH-funded Research Project Grants. He was the North American Coordinator and Principal Investigator on the Leducq Foundation Network of Excellence on Potassium in Hypertension. He also serves as Co-Director of Maryland Polycystic Kidney Disease Research and Translation Center is Co-Director of Biomedical Resource Core for the Johns Hopkins Center O’Brien Center to Advance Kidney Health Equity. He has held leadership and scientific advisory roles for the National Institutes of Health, American Society of Nephrology, and American Society of Physiology. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA) and is an elected Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association of American Physicians.
